The short answer

To get karma on Reddit, comment and post in communities you know well enough to be useful in, because karma is Reddit's running reflection of the upvotes and downvotes your posts and comments receive.1 The fastest route that stays inside the rules is early, specific comments on rising threads in small and mid-size subreddits. The gate is automated: Reddit's transparency report for July to December 2025 says community moderators made 52.7% of all post and comment removals, and that 68.6% of moderator removals were handled by automated systems such as AutoModerator,2 the same tool that enforces minimum-karma rules.3

Key takeaways
  • Karma reflects the upvotes and downvotes on your posts and comments, and Reddit says the two do not have a 1:1 relationship.1
  • To check karma on Reddit, open your profile: hover the total on desktop, or open the About tab in the app.1
  • Subreddits set their own minimum karma through AutoModerator, and Reddit's Contributor Quality Score sorts every account into one of five tiers on top of that.3
  • Reposting for karma, coordinated voting and buying an account are each named in a Reddit policy, so none of them is a shortcut.5
  • A founder who needs to answer a live thread this week can approve a Bavior draft instead of waiting for a new account to clear the gate.

What is karma on Reddit, and how is it counted?

Karma is the score beside a Reddit username. Reddit's Help Center defines it in one sentence: “Your karma is a reflection of the upvotes and downvotes you receive on posts and comments you've made.”1 It comes in two parts, post karma and comment karma, and the profile shows them added together. The count is deliberately approximate. The same page says upvotes and karma “don't have a 1:1 relationship”.

Karma cannot be spent. It acts as a reputation signal that two audiences read. Moderators read it through AutoModerator rules that hold back posts from accounts under a threshold. Reddit reads it as one input to the Contributor Quality Score, covered below. The Reddit glossary defines terms like mod, flair and shadowban.

Reddit's own advice is blunt: “Don't set out to accumulate karma; just set out to be a good contributor.”1 That describes how the scoring works. It leaves open the practical question of how a brand-new account gets any.

The method

How do you earn karma on Reddit as a new account?

You earn karma on Reddit by being useful where you have something to say. Six steps, in order, cover how to get Reddit karma from zero.

  1. Verify your email and secure the account. Reddit lists “steps a redditor has taken to secure their account (e.g. email verification)” among the signals behind its Contributor Quality Score.3
  2. Pick three to five subreddits you genuinely know. Rule 2 of the Reddit Rules asks you to “participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest”.7
  3. Read each community's rules before anything else. Reddiquette puts it second on its list: “Read the rules of a community before making a submission.”9
  4. Comment before you post. Many subreddits gate posts more tightly than comments.
  5. Answer the question that was asked, with specifics. Numbers, steps, the thing you tried that failed. Replies that show real experience are the ones that get upvoted.
  6. Keep your own links out until the account has a history. Reddiquette's rule of thumb is a 9:1 ratio: “only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content.”9

If you are unsure where to start, Reddit's karma help page points new users to r/NewToReddit's list of communities it calls “new user friendly”.1 Those are ordinary topic communities, which is a different thing from a subreddit that exists to trade votes.

Elena, an indie developer selling a $12-a-month habit tracker, gave this 20 minutes a day. She answered two questions a day in three small productivity and iOS development subreddits, never mentioned her app, and after five weeks had 340 comment karma. Illustrative rather than a customer report. What it proves is that the honest route works. What it leaves unsolved is the five weeks.

Speed

How do you get karma on Reddit fast without breaking the rules?

Speed on Reddit comes from timing and placement, not from tricks. Getting karma on Reddit fast means putting a useful comment where it collects the most votes per minute of effort, and that has four honest answers.

  • Sort by Rising and New, not Hot. A comment posted in a thread's first hour collects votes for as long as the thread keeps growing. At hour ten it sits under 400 others.
  • Prefer mid-size subreddits. In a community of 30,000 your answer is one of six. In a community of 3 million it is one of six hundred.
  • Put the answer in the first two lines. Most readers never expand a long comment.
  • Show up daily. Fifteen minutes every day catches more rising threads than two hours on a Sunday.

Once an account is past its first thresholds, the way to get more karma on Reddit is original posts in the niche you have been commenting in: a teardown, a small dataset, a lesson with real numbers.

Two habits feel fast and work against you. Reposting content that was popular once before is the pattern Reddit's Spam policy describes as “repeatedly posting or sharing old content for the purpose of rapidly gaining karma”.6 Asking for votes is listed under “please don't” in Reddiquette, in the words “hint at asking for votes”.9 Done well, fast still means weeks, not days.

The gate

How much karma do you need, and how do you check karma on Reddit?

There is no sitewide number. Each subreddit sets its own, and Reddit's Help Center explains why: “some communities require a certain amount of karma before allowing you to post there. This measure is taken to prevent spamming within the community.”1 Most moderators keep the figure private. The sample rules in Reddit's own moderator documentation filter accounts with a combined karma under 20, or with under 5 karma earned inside that subreddit.3

Karma is also no longer the only number. Reddit assigns every account a Contributor Quality Score in one of five tiers, based on “past actions taken on a redditor's account, network and location signals” and account security steps.3 Moderators can switch on a reputation filter built on it, which Reddit says “uses karma, verification, and other account signals” to hold content from “unestablished accounts” for review.4

To check karma on Reddit on desktop, click your avatar, choose View Profile, and hover the total to see the post and comment split. In the iOS and Android apps, open your profile and tap the About tab.1 To read any account's total, split and age in one place, use Bavior's karma checker.

Dalton, a solo founder of a $39-a-month invoicing tool, created an account on a Monday and posted his launch to a 200,000-member small business subreddit that afternoon. He had 1 karma and no comments. The post looked live from his side and never appeared in the feed, so he submitted it twice more. By Wednesday all three were removed and he was banned from the subreddit for spam. Illustrative rather than a customer report. The thresholds protect communities well. What they leave unsolved is the founder with something useful to say and a six-day-old account.

The Bavior route

How does Bavior get a founder into the thread without a karma grind?

The karma gate creates a timing problem. The thread asking for a tool like yours is live today, and a new account clears the threshold in a month or more. Bavior is an AI agent for Reddit growth and AI search visibility that closes that gap. It monitors the subreddits your buyers use, finds the threads worth answering, reads each community's rules first, and drafts a reply in your voice. Nothing is sent until you approve it.

Once a draft is approved there are two ways out. You can delegate sending, in which case a human operator schedules it and it goes out through an aged account with an established karma history that Bavior provides. Or you can publish manually from your own account, which means your account still has to clear that subreddit's threshold. Most founders do both: delegate the threads that cannot wait and build their own account alongside.

In the product, that decision sits in the Send checklist beside every draft: Review and edit the draft, Approve, then Tracking starts automatically after sending. Publishing manually? opens the steps for posting it yourself. The sample draft below states its affiliation in its closing paragraph. Where a subreddit requires disclosure of a commercial connection, edit it in before approving.

Whitney, the founder of a two-person scheduling startup, had a nine-day-old account with 4 karma when a thread asking for exactly her kind of tool reached 60 comments. She approved a draft in ten minutes on a Tuesday, delegated the send, and spent the next six weeks building her own account to 280 karma the slow way. Illustrative rather than a customer report. She did not have to choose between answering the thread and earning her reputation honestly.

This reduces risk. It does not remove it. A moderator can still remove any post. What approval buys is a second pair of eyes and a check against the subreddit's rules before anything goes out. Plans start at $99/mo billed monthly, or $79.17/mo billed annually (checked 20 Sep 2026), with a free trial. The longer playbook is in how to promote on Reddit without getting banned.

What not to do

Which karma shortcuts break Reddit's rules?

Three of them, and each is named in a Reddit policy. Reddit's Disrupting Communities policy prohibits “vote cheating or manipulation, whether manual, programmatic, or otherwise”, including “coordinated voting with an organized group of people”, and “automated means to manipulate karma”.5 A community whose whole purpose is swapping upvotes is coordinated voting by design. Reposting old content to gain karma quickly is in the Spam policy.6 And buying an aged account runs into the User Agreement: “You will not license, sell, or transfer your Account without our prior written approval.”8

Reddit says it combines “reports by moderators, users, and internal systems to aggregate signals”,5 and its admins removed 54,399,238 posts and comments between July and December 2025, with spam the majority of admin removals at 54%.2 An account wiped for manipulation takes its karma, its history and every link you ever posted with it.

The payoff

Does more karma make your Reddit posts matter more?

Less than you would expect. Karma gets you through the door, and after that the thread does the work. Semrush's study of 248,000 Reddit URLs cited by AI search tools found that the median cited post has 5 to 8 upvotes, that 80% of cited posts have fewer than 20, and that cited threads average about 900 days old.10 A clear answer in the right thread keeps being read, and keeps being quoted by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, long after the votes stop.

This is where Reddit growth and AI visibility overlap. For a business, the unit that matters is the thread, not the score. Bavior tracks that directly: open a thread from Sources and the detail page shows its total citations, the engines that cited it, a 30-day trend, and Top prompts, the tracked questions that led an engine to that one thread.

So treat karma as a byproduct. Earn enough of it, honestly, that the communities you care about let you in, then spend your effort on the threads where your buyers are asking questions. The plan for choosing them is in the Reddit marketing strategy guide.

About the karma checker, and what no tool can see

Bavior's karma checker runs inside a Bavior account, which starts with a free trial. It reads public numbers: total karma, the post and comment split, and account age. It cannot read a subreddit's private AutoModerator thresholds or an account's Contributor Quality Score, because Reddit does not publish either. For your own account, your Reddit profile shows the same totals for free.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is karma on Reddit?

Karma is the score on a Reddit profile. Reddit defines it as a reflection of the upvotes and downvotes you receive on your posts and comments, split into post karma and comment karma. Reddit says upvotes and karma do not have a 1:1 relationship, so the total is approximate.

How do you check karma on Reddit?

On reddit.com, click your avatar, choose View Profile, and hover the total karma to see the post and comment split. In the iOS and Android apps, open your profile and tap the About tab. Any account's total is public on its profile page.

How much karma do you need to post on Reddit?

There is no sitewide minimum. Each subreddit sets its own threshold through AutoModerator and most keep it private. The sample rules in Reddit's moderator documentation filter accounts under 20 combined karma or under 5 karma in that subreddit. Account age and Reddit's Contributor Quality Score can count too.

What is the fastest way to get karma on Reddit?

Early, specific comments on rising threads in small and mid-size subreddits you know well. Sort by Rising or New, put the answer in the first two lines, and show up daily. Expect weeks rather than days. Reposting for karma and asking for upvotes both run against Reddit's Spam policy and Reddiquette.

Can you buy Reddit karma or an aged account?

Not within Reddit's rules. The User Agreement says you will not license, sell, or transfer your account without Reddit's written approval, and the Disrupting Communities policy prohibits vote manipulation, including voting services and coordinated voting. Accounts caught lose their karma and their history.
