Which sites belong on a parasite SEO sites list, and which ones get you penalized?
Most parasite SEO sites lists are menus of places to buy a sponsored post. This one lists ten high-authority platforms where publishing under your own account is the intended use, with every rule, link attribute and AI citation sourced and dated.
On this page
A usable parasite SEO sites list in 2026 has ten entries where posting under your own account is what the platform is for: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Quora, Medium, GitHub, Substack, Product Hunt, Stack Overflow and Hacker News. Reddit is the strongest of the ten, because it is the one host that both fills Google's first page and leads AI citations. Ahrefs' September 2026 tables rank reddit.com first among ChatGPT's cited sources at 16.8% mention share and second in Google AI Overviews at 18.5%.5 What belongs on no list is a page you pay a publisher to host, the practice Google's site reputation policy was written for.1
Key takeaways- Google's policy targets third-party content hosted “mainly because of that host's already-established ranking signals”. Forums and comment sections are named as not covered.1
- That is not a free pass: “spammy posts on forum threads” are user-generated spam, and paying for posts that contain links is link spam.1
- Every platform on the list restricts promotion. Medium and Substack name search rankings as a banned motive.12
- The durable form of parasite SEO is an earned mention inside a thread that already ranks, not a planted page.
What is parasite SEO, and what should a sites list tell you?
Parasite SEO is the practice of ranking on Google through a site that already has authority instead of through your own domain. The term covers two very different activities. One is renting a page: paying a publisher, or a broker, to host your article on a strong domain so it borrows that domain's ranking signals. The other is participating on a platform: posting under your own account on a site built for user content, such as a subreddit, a YouTube channel or a GitHub repository.
Most pages ranking for “parasite SEO sites” blur the two, and many are price lists for the first kind. That is the version Google wrote a spam policy about, and the one that got national publishers removed from search results in November 2024.4 A useful list answers four questions per site: what the platform is for, what its own rules say about self-promotion, whether outbound links pass ranking credit, and whether AI engines cite it. Bavior's parasite SEO feature page shows the Reddit version inside the product.
What does Google's site reputation abuse policy actually cover?
It covers third-party content placed on a host site to exploit the host's ranking signals. Google announced the policy on 5 March 2024, with enforcement from 5 May 2024. The first wording targeted third-party pages “published with little or no first-party oversight or involvement”.2 On 19 November 2024 Google closed that loophole: using third-party content to exploit a site's ranking signals is a violation “regardless of whether there is first-party involvement or oversight of the content”.3
The live spam policies page, stamped last updated 28 Aug 2026, now titles the section “Site reputation policy”. It applies “where third-party content is published on a host site mainly because of that host's already-established ranking signals, which it has earned primarily from its first-party content”.1 Its examples are an educational site hosting a third party's sponsored payday loan reviews, and a medical site hosting a low-quality third-party advertising page about “best casinos”. Enforcement is by human review: a manual action outside the European Economic Area, while inside it the pages may be categorized as separate from the main domain.
What the policy does not cover matters as much. Google's page lists “sites designed to allow user-generated content, such as a forum website or comment sections”, along with wire services, syndicated news and editorial columns.1 The November 2024 FAQ adds that third-party content alone is not a violation.3
Two neighboring policies close that gap. Google's user-generated spam policy names “spammy posts on forum threads”. Its link spam policy names “exchanging money for links, or posts that contain links”.1 So a Reddit comment is not site reputation abuse, but fifty pasted link drops are still spam, and a bought guest post is still a bought link. The test is whether the content exists for the platform's readers or for the host's ranking signals.
Which sites belong on a parasite SEO sites list in 2026?
Ten platforms qualify, because on each one publishing under your own account is the intended use rather than a paid exception. Every row was checked on 20 Sep 2026. A cell reads not published where the platform does not document the answer and we could not verify it ourselves.
| Platform | Built for | Self-promotion rule, from its own policy page | Outbound links | AI citations (Ahrefs top 50, Sep 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Questions and recommendations in subreddits | Reddit Rules, Rule 2: “Participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam”. Each subreddit adds its own rule | Not published. Reddit served a login page to our check | ChatGPT #1, 16.8%. AI Overviews #2, 18.5% | |
| YouTube | Tutorials and demos on your own channel | Spam policy: no comment spam, no “content created solely to drive users off of YouTube to external sites” | Not published. Its links policy says some links may not be clickable | AI Overviews #1, 22.9%. ChatGPT #8, 2.5% |
| Articles under your real professional identity | Community Policies: no “inappropriate commercial or promotional” content, no fake profiles | Not published | AI Overviews #19, 0.6%. ChatGPT #38, 1.1% | |
| Quora | Question and answer pages | Platform Policies: spam includes “excessively promoting the same product or service” to drive traffic to an external site | Not published | AI Overviews #6, 4.7%. Not in ChatGPT top 50 |
| Medium | Essays under your own byline | Medium Rules: first-party promotion is allowed, but posting “primarily to drive traffic to, or increase the search rankings of, an external site” is spam | Not published | AI Overviews #31, 0.4%. Not in ChatGPT top 50 |
| GitHub | Code, READMEs and documentation | Acceptable Use Policies: an account's primary focus “should not be advertising or promotional marketing” | nofollow on 8 of 8 external README links in our check | In neither top 50 |
| Substack | Editorial newsletters | Content Guidelines: no publications whose primary purpose is to “enhance search engine optimization” | Not published | In neither top 50 |
| Product Hunt | Launch day for a new product | Community Guidelines: asking for upvotes is “not acceptable”, and self-promotion in comments is removed | Not published | In neither top 50 |
| Stack Overflow | Technical questions and answers | How to not be a spammer: mention your product and “you must disclose your affiliation in your post” | Not published. Our request was refused | In neither top 50 |
| Hacker News | Links and Show HN posts | Guidelines: “Please don't use HN primarily for promotion. It's ok to post your own stuff part of the time” | nofollow on 29 of 29 external story links on /newest in our check | In neither top 50 |
Three patterns stand out. First, every platform restricts promotion, and Medium and Substack name search rankings as a banned motive.12 Second, the link column barely matters. Google recommends marking user-generated links with rel="ugc" and says links qualified this way “will generally not be followed”.10 The value of these hosts is the page that ranks and the mention inside it, not link equity. Third, only five of the ten appear in either of Ahrefs' top 50 tables, and only Reddit sits near the top of both.5
Why is Reddit the strongest entry on the list?
Because it is the only host here that wins on both surfaces. On Google, Reddit's position is structural: in February 2024 Google announced access to Reddit's Data API and said the partnership “will facilitate more content-forward displays of Reddit information”.9 That is why “reddit SEO” became a search term, and why founders ask how to rank on Google with Reddit instead of with a blog.
On AI engines, Reddit leads ChatGPT's citations and sits second in AI Overviews in Ahrefs' September 2026 data.5 Semrush's 13-week study of more than 100 million citations shows why no share is fixed: Reddit's presence in ChatGPT responses fell from close to 60% in early August 2025 to around 10% by mid-September.7 The honest unit is share of voice over time, never a guaranteed placement.
The detail that matters most for a small company is which threads get cited. Semrush's analysis of 248,000 cited Reddit URLs found a median of five to eight upvotes, 80% of cited posts under 20 upvotes, and an average post age near 900 days.8 AI engines quote small, old, specific Q&A threads, the kind a useful reply can still join. See why third-party pages dominate.
Reddit is also the strictest host on the list. Rule 2 of the Reddit Rules is to “participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest”, and Reddit's spam policy names repeatedly posting “link-farmed content” as a violation.11 Each subreddit adds its own self-promotion rule, enforced by its mods. The strongest entry is the one you cannot plant a page on. You have to earn the mention.
How does Bavior get you into the Reddit threads that already rank?
Bavior is an AI agent for Reddit growth and AI search visibility, built around the problem this list describes: the pages that rank and get cited for your category already exist, and you are not in them. It runs in three steps, and you hold the one that matters.
First, it finds the threads. Bavior tracks which domains AI engines cite for your category's prompts, and which Reddit threads hold those citations. In the Top Cited Domains card below, reddit.com leads the sample workspace with a UGC type label.
Second, it drafts a native reply in your voice. The subreddit's rules are read before the draft is written. The draft answers the OP first and names your product only where it is an honest fit. Where a subreddit requires disclosure of commercial affiliation, the post has to carry it, as the sample draft below does in its last paragraph: “Context: I work on Quietdesk”.
Third, nothing publishes until you approve it. Every draft waits in a queue marked Pending approval, where you edit, approve or skip. Approved replies go out from your own Reddit account or from Bavior's aged, high-karma accounts, and both modes pass through the same approval step. There is no vote manipulation, no staged sockpuppet conversation, and no promise that a mod will keep a comment up. Account safety is risk reduction, not immunity.
Lena, the founder of a two-person help desk startup, ran this for six weeks. Seven of the ten page-one results for her main buyer question were Reddit threads. She approved nine replies and skipped fourteen drafts that felt forced, and her product is now named in three of those threads. Illustrative rather than a customer report: the outcome is mention share, not a ranking anyone can promise.
What happened to the sites that rented out their reputation?
They received manual actions within hours of the November 2024 clarification. Search Engine Roundtable reported on 20 November 2024 that CNN Underscored, Forbes Advisor, WSJ Buy Side and Men's Journal had sections drop out of Google overnight.4 Search Engine Journal quoted analyst Glenn Gabe on CNN Underscored, “just 10 urls indexed”, and Lily Ray on Forbes Advisor, “entire folders penalized and deindexed”.4
Devon, a founder selling a $39-a-month invoicing tool, took the buyer's side of that trade. He paid $1,800 for twelve placements from a broker's list of parasite SEO sites. Four went up on Medium and were removed as spam. The other eight sat in a sponsored folder on a regional news site that dropped out of Google five months later. Illustrative rather than a customer report. Rented authority belongs to the landlord, and the landlord can lose it.
How do you use this list without becoming the spam?
Run four checks before you publish anything on a host you do not own.
- Would it exist without Google? If the content only makes sense as a ranking play, Google and the platform both treat it as spam.
- Is it under your own name or account? LinkedIn bans fake profiles, Reddit's Rule 5 says be authentic, and Product Hunt wants profiles that represent an individual.1112
- Did you read the local rule? On Reddit that means the subreddit's sidebar and wiki, not only the sitewide policy. See the guide to promoting on Reddit without getting banned and the Reddit glossary for karma, flair and shadowban.
- Did you disclose? Stack Overflow requires it in every post that mentions your product, and many subreddits require it for any commercial tie.12
Then measure the right thing: not a backlink count, but whether your brand is named in the pages that rank and get cited for your category, tracked as mention share over time. The AI SEO feature reports on exactly that.
Ranking and citation data describe domains, not your category. YouTube leads AI Overviews overall and may matter more than Reddit for a product that needs a demo. Eight cells in the link column read not published, because those platforms do not document link attributes and we would not guess. Check your own category's cited sources before you choose a host.

Frequently asked questions.
What is parasite SEO?
Parasite SEO is ranking on Google through a site that already has authority instead of your own domain. The abusive form rents a page on a publisher's domain. The durable form is participating under your own account on a platform built for user content, such as a useful reply in a ranking Reddit thread.
Is parasite SEO against Google's guidelines?
Renting a page is. Google's site reputation policy applies where third-party content is published on a host mainly because of the host's ranking signals. Forums and comment sections are listed as not covered, but spammy forum posts fall under Google's user-generated spam policy, and paying for posts that contain links is link spam.
What are the best parasite SEO sites in 2026?
Ten platforms where posting under your own account is the intended use: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Quora, Medium, GitHub, Substack, Product Hunt, Stack Overflow and Hacker News. Reddit is the strongest, ranking first among ChatGPT's cited sources and second in Google AI Overviews in Ahrefs' September 2026 tables.
Do links from Reddit, Medium or Quora help SEO?
Treat them as not passing ranking credit. Google recommends that sites mark user-generated links with rel="ugc" and says such links will generally not be followed. The value is the ranking page and the mention inside it, not the link.
Can you rank on Google with Reddit without getting banned?
Yes, if the reply is worth reading with your product removed. Read the subreddit's self-promotion rule, answer the OP first, disclose your affiliation where required, and space your activity out. No tool can promise a mod will keep a comment up, so treat safety as risk reduction.
