What does each one actually monitor?
F5Bot monitors three places: Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters. Its FAQ says so plainly, “Currently Reddit, Hacker News, and Lobste.rs”, and it has run on that scope since 2017.1 Syften monitors sixteen or so: Reddit, Hacker News, the Stack Exchange family, GitHub, Indie Hackers, Dev.to, Lobsters, Product Hunt, Mastodon, Bluesky, Slack communities, forums, newsletters, podcasts, blogs and websites.2
That difference decides most of this comparison before you look at price. If your product is a developer tool, the thread that matters is as likely to be a GitHub issue or a Stack Overflow answer as a Reddit post, and F5Bot will never show it to you. If you sell to a non-technical audience, most of Syften's extra sources are dead weight.
This is the shared blind spot. F5Bot takes keywords you supply; you can narrow by subreddit but it will not tell you which subreddits to target. Syften targets subreddits manually with a site: operator, for example site:reddit.com/r/saas/. If you do not already know where your buyers are, neither product answers that, and it is the job the category's best-known tool was doing before it shut down.
How fast is each alert, really?
Syften targets delivery in under a minute for Reddit, and its documentation says Reddit alerts are fetched live.2 F5Bot's speed is tier-dependent, and this is the part most comparisons get wrong: its own tiers table gives within 2 hours on the free plan, within 5 minutes on Silver, and instant or scheduled on Gold and above.1
Two hours is a long time on Reddit. A thread that will draw a hundred comments collects most of them in its first few hours, so latency, not the keyword count, is the free tier's real constraint if you monitor to join conversations rather than to record them.
Priya, a solo founder selling a $49-a-month invoicing tool, ran the free tier for six weeks. A thread in r/smallbusiness asking what people use to chase late payments went up at 9:40am; her alert landed at 11:28. By then the post had 61 comments and the top one named a competitor. What does each tier cost, and which limit runs out first?
The two products meter different things, so a straight price comparison misleads. F5Bot meters keywords and daily alert volume. Syften meters filters and daily results, and gates archive depth by tier: seven days on Entry, one month on Standard, unlimited on PRO. Work out which limit you will hit first.

Two details worth knowing before you commit. F5Bot supports no regular expressions and no wildcards, keywords match exactly as entered, and its FAQ says free accounts cannot monitor very common words or phrases.1 Syften has a real query language with operators, site:, post-versus-comment targeting and negative terms, which is the thing you will want the first time a broad keyword floods your inbox. On billing, Syften folds AI relevance filtering into Standard and above, while F5Bot puts it on Gold and above and includes the first $10 a month of tokens, charging usage past that on top of the plan.1
Is F5Bot's free tier still enough in 2026?
For a personal project, yes. For a company, read the terms first. The free plan is 5 keywords, 10 hits per keyword per day, 20 alerts a day, two-hour latency and ads in the email, and the tiers page labels it personal use only.1 The FAQ puts it the same way: the free tier exists for personal use and is a good way to try the service.
Marcus, a founder of a two-person developer-tools company, put the company's brand monitoring on the free tier to save $10 a month. It held for five weeks. Then a launch post pushed his product's name into forty-odd threads in a day, the 20-alert daily cap quietly swallowed the overflow, and the two threads he would have wanted to answer arrived the next afternoon, long after they had gone quiet. Nothing broke and no metric moved, which is the worst kind of failure: the tool looked like it was working the whole time. Illustrative numbers, but the caps are the published ones.
So the widely repeated line that F5Bot is the unlimited free Reddit monitor is out of date. It is still the best free option in the category, run by an operator who publishes real numbers rather than a demo request. But for a company's brand monitoring the correct plan is Silver at $9.99, which is also where the two-hour delay disappears.
Which one should you actually pick?

The cheap experiment is not which alerter to buy, it is whether you will act on the alerts at all. Run a free feed for two weeks and count two numbers: threads worth answering, and threads you actually answered. If the second number is much smaller than the first, no alerting tier fixes that, and the gap is what Bavior is for.
A third-party roundup of Syften alternatives lists as a limitation that there is “no relevance scoring or AI filtering” and that every matching keyword fires an alert regardless of context.3 That is half right, and we are flagging it because it is the criticism you will meet most often: Syften's own plan table does include AI filtering, but on Standard at $49.95 and on PRO, not on the $29.95 Entry tier.2 So the noise complaint is real at the entry price and answered one tier up, at which point Syften costs more than five times F5Bot Silver.
Why not just roll your own with Reddit's RSS?
You can, and for a side project you probably should. Reddit's search endpoint returns an Atom feed at reddit.com/search.rss with no account and no tool. We checked it on 27 Aug 2026 and again on 2026-08-30: HTTP 200 both times. On the same runs, the per-subreddit feed at /r/<subreddit>/new.rss returned HTTP 429, rate limited.4
So a homemade feed reader works until it is throttled, and it does not tell you it has stopped. What $9.99 or $29.95 a month buys is somebody else owning the retry logic, the deduplication and the day the endpoint changes shape. What none of the three buys is the reply, which is the only step that changes anything.
Which of the three actually answers the thread?
Neither writes anything, and neither posts anything. Syften's Reddit page describes routing matches to a person over Slack, email, RSS, API or webhook, and that is the whole job.2 F5Bot emails you a link, and that is the whole product. That leaves the work on a person: read the thread, decide whether replying is appropriate, check the subreddit's rules, write something that does not read like marketing, and post it. Reddit's content policy asks you to participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest and not to spam, which is a judgement someone has to make thread by thread.5
Dana, the head of growth at a twelve-person analytics company, paid for Syften Entry for six months.
