The short answer

A Reddit RSS feed is any Reddit listing URL with .rss added to the end: reddit.com/r/SaaS/new/.rss for a subreddit, reddit.com/user/NAME/.rss for a user, reddit.com/search.rss?q=KEYWORD&sort=new for a search. It needs no account and returns the 25 newest items as an Atom feed. Reddit reported 130.3 million daily active uniques for the second quarter of 2026,1 so a free feed of those conversations is worth the setup. The catch we measured on 20 Sep 2026: with no login, Reddit answered one feed request per minute from our network and sent HTTP 429 to the rest.2

Key takeaways
  • Twelve feed URL patterns returned HTTP 200 in our test.2
  • Reddit RSS feeds not working is almost always HTTP 429, sent with an empty body.2
  • A search feed gives you Reddit keyword alerts for $0, but it matches posts, never comments.
  • A feed says a thread exists. It does not score it, read the subreddit's rules or write the reply.
The basics

What is a Reddit RSS feed, and does Reddit still support it?

A Reddit RSS feed is the machine-readable version of a Reddit page: add .rss to a listing URL and Reddit returns the same posts as XML for a feed reader to poll. When we requested reddit.com/r/SaaS/.rss on 20 Sep 2026, the response was HTTP 200 with the content type application/atom+xml.2 So Reddit RSS is technically Atom, the format defined in RFC 4287.5 Readers handle both, but a script that looks for <item> tags finds nothing, because Atom calls them <entry>.

Each entry carried the author, the subreddit, the body as HTML, a link, timestamps and an id such as t3_1v8d8d2. Posts start with t3_, comments with t1_, communities with t5_. RFC 4287 calls that id a permanent, universally unique identifier, which makes it the right key for deduplication.5 A feed holds 25 entries by default, and ?limit=100 returned exactly 100.

Support is the awkward part. Reddit's Help Center had no article on reading Reddit by RSS when we searched it. Developer Jeff Johnson quotes an r/modnews post in which Reddit called RSS “another common surface for scraping” and asked moderators how they use it.4 What this settles: the feed exists and needs no account. What it leaves open: how long it stays this generous.

The patterns

Which Reddit RSS feed URLs work for subreddits, users, searches and threads?

All twelve patterns below returned HTTP 200 and a valid Atom feed on 20 Sep 2026, with no Reddit login and a normal browser user agent. Each starts with https://www.reddit.com. Replace the capitalised parts.2

What you want to followFeed URL patternWhat came back, 20 Sep 2026

A user, posts and comments/user/USERNAME/.rss200 · 23 comments, 2 posts
A user, comments only/user/USERNAME/comments/.rss200 · 25 comments
A user, posts only/user/USERNAME/submitted/.rss200 · 23 posts
A keyword across Reddit/search.rss?q=KEYWORD&sort=new200 · 3 communities, 22 posts
A keyword inside one subreddit/r/SUBREDDIT/search.rss?q=KEYWORD&restrict_sr=on&sort=new200 · 25 posts
One comment thread/r/SUBREDDIT/comments/POST_ID/.rss200 · the post, then 36 comments
Every new comment in a subreddit/r/SUBREDDIT/comments/.rss200 · 25 comments

Three details matter. The hot listing opens with stickied moderator posts, and the first entry we received was almost eight weeks old, so monitor /new/. The + syntax merges subreddits into one feed, which saves requests. POST_ID is the short code after /comments/ in a thread's address. A subreddit that does not exist returned HTTP 404 and an empty feed. What this leaves unsolved: whether your reader can fetch any of it.

Keyword alerts

How do you turn a Reddit RSS feed into Reddit keyword alerts?

Use the search feed, sorted by new. /search.rss?q=KEYWORD&sort=new is a standing search that your reader re-runs, the closest thing to free Reddit keyword alerts with no third party. Put a phrase in quotes and encode it, as in q=%22help+desk%22, and add restrict_sr=on to the subreddit version to stay inside one community. Without sort=new, Reddit sorts by relevance and old threads keep resurfacing.

Our site-wide search opened with three community entries. More important, every other entry was a post: no comment appeared in any search feed we pulled.2 A request that names your category in its title reaches you. Your brand in the fortieth comment of someone else's thread does not. The only comment feed, /r/SUBREDDIT/comments/.rss, is every comment in the subreddit with no keyword filter.

Workflow example: keep separate feeds for a brand, competitors and a problem phrase. Label each entry before replying: relevant question, general discussion or accidental match. This illustrates a process, not a customer case study.

Troubleshooting

Why are Reddit RSS feeds not working?

Check the response before choosing a fix. HTTP 429 indicates rate limiting; 403, an HTML response or an empty result need their own diagnosis. The historical test below describes one network and date, not a universal refresh allowance.

That matches what Jeff Johnson documented on 12 Jun 2026, when his 25 or so feeds began failing at once: he measured one update per minute, down from what he says was 100 per 10 minutes.4 A reader that refreshes 25 feeds in one burst gets one answer and 24 errors, and many readers show a failed fetch as “no new items”.

What else makes a Reddit feed fail?

  • A default user agent. curl's default user agent got HTTP 403 and an HTML block page, twice.2 Reddit's wiki says many default user agents “are drastically limited”, and that traffic without OAuth or login credentials “will be blocked”, so anonymous feeds run on tolerance.3
  • A hosted reader. A cloud reader fetches for thousands of subscribers from a few addresses. BazQux Reader ended a wave of Reddit 429 errors in August 2023 by fetching Reddit less often.10

The fixes follow. Space requests 65 seconds apart, merge subreddits with +, raise limit, and send a descriptive user agent. Johnson reports that adding the user= and feed= parameters from his reddit.com/prefs/feeds page stopped the errors. We have not tested that, because it needs a logged-in account. The token identifies your account, so treat it like a password.

Failure example: a reader refreshes many feeds together and receives errors. Record each response and slow down according to the service’s current instructions; do not assume that changing the URL or network grants more access.

After the alert

What does a Reddit RSS feed leave undone, and how does Bavior handle it?

A feed tells you a thread exists. It does not say whether the thread is worth answering, what the subreddit allows, or what to write, and nobody answers a feed reader. Those gaps are the real work of Reddit monitoring, and they are what Bavior is built around: it monitors your keywords across Reddit, scores each thread, drafts a reply in your voice, and publishes only after you approve it.

In Bavior's brand monitoring, a matching thread arrives as a card, not a line of XML. Read the sentiment tag, an intent tag such as How-to or Complaint, and a Lead quality score out of 100. View post opens the thread. Generate comment starts a draft.

Two Bavior mention cards for a demo brand, one from r/sysadmin tagged Neutral and How-to with lead quality 55 out of 100, one from r/SaaS tagged Negative and Complaint with lead quality 76 out of 100, each with Generate comment and View post buttons
Sample data from a demo workspace. Thread titles are illustrative, not real Reddit posts. Red boxes: the intent tags, which a raw feed entry does not carry.

The draft then waits as Pending approval beside a Send checklist: review and edit, Approve, then tracking. Nothing is published before that approval, from an account Bavior provides or from your own. The approval step reduces risk and does not remove it. Reddiquette still applies, including its rule of thumb that one in ten submissions should be your own content,9 and where a subreddit requires you to disclose an affiliation, the reply should say so.

Sample data from a demo workspace. The draft shown is a post rather than a comment, and its text is illustrative. The red box marks Approve, step 2 of the Send checklist.

A feed reader and a reply workflow solve different tasks. Before paying for another tool, check whether the bottleneck is finding discussions, qualifying them or preparing a response. A faster alert will not resolve every bottleneck.

Bavior is $99 a month billed monthly, or $79.17 a month billed annually, with a free trial (prices checked 20 Sep 2026). What RSS proved: finding threads is cheap. What it left unsolved is answering them well.

Side by side

How does RSS compare with a Reddit monitoring tool or an F5Bot alternative?

RSS is the do-it-yourself F5Bot alternative: the same job, noticing, with no keyword cap, in exchange for owning the plumbing. F5Bot's tiers page lists a free plan marked personal use only and a Silver plan at $9.99 a month.8 A full Reddit monitoring tool adds the judgement and the reply.

OptionPrice, checked 20 Sep 2026Finds the threadScores itDrafts the reply
Bavior$99/mo monthly · $79.17/mo annually · free trialYes, keywords across RedditYes, intent tag and lead quality scoreYes, published only after you approve
Reddit RSS, self-built$0Posts only · one request a minute without loginNoNo
F5Bot Free$0 · personal use only5 keywords · 20 alerts/day · within 2 hoursNoNo
F5Bot Silver$9.99/mo20 keywords · 100 alerts/day · within 5 minutesNoNo

If threads already reach you and go unanswered, a faster alert changes nothing, and Bavior is the row that does the missing half. The wider field is in Reddit monitoring tools compared, the alert-only head-to-head is F5Bot vs Syften, and every $0 option is in free Reddit tools that still work.

The ceiling

Can a business rely on RSS for Reddit monitoring?

For personal reading, yes. As infrastructure, plan for it to tighten. Reddit's Data API Terms, last revised 20 Jul 2026, say Reddit “may set and enforce limits on your use of the Data APIs”, and that using them “for commercial purposes” requires “a separate agreement with Reddit”.6 Those terms never name RSS. The Responsible Builder Policy is broader: it covers all access to Reddit data, says “you must not circumvent or exceed access limits”, and requires written approval for commercial use.7

None of that stops a founder from reading a subreddit in a feed reader, and we are not lawyers. It does mean that rotating addresses to dodge the 429 is what that sentence describes, and that Reddit has publicly named RSS as a common surface for scraping.4 What the policies settle: limits are Reddit's to set. What they leave open: when the next one arrives.

What we could not verify

Our requests came from one network on one day, and Reddit publishes no limit for anonymous feeds, so your allowance may differ or change. We did not test the user= and feed= workaround. Bavior is our product and it is paid: if you only need to notice posts, the free feed does that.

The checklist

How do you set up a Reddit RSS monitor that survives the rate limit?

Budget requests before you add feeds. At one request a minute, a 15-minute refresh cycle has 15 slots.

  1. Write the keyword list first: your brand, two competitors and two or three problem phrases. The strategy guide covers choosing them.
  2. Create one search feed per phrase with sort=new, plus one merged /r/SUB1+SUB2/new/.rss feed.
  3. Stay under ten feeds on a 15-minute cycle, which leaves five slots for retries.
  4. Stagger fetches 65 seconds apart and send a descriptive user agent.3
  5. Deduplicate on the entry id and alert on errors: a 429, a 403, or no HTTP 200 for two hours. Never treat silence as good news.
  6. Count every Friday: threads surfaced, threads answered. If you answer under a third, finding was never the bottleneck.

Expect the ground to keep moving. Reddit tightened its API rate limits in 202310 and throttled feeds in 2026.4 Build the monitor to fail loudly, keep it small, and spend the effort on replies, the part no feed format will ever carry.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is the RSS feed URL for a subreddit?

Add .rss to the listing address. For the newest posts use reddit.com/r/SUBREDDIT/new/.rss, and for several communities at once use reddit.com/r/SUB1+SUB2/new/.rss. Both returned HTTP 200 and 25 entries in our test on 20 Sep 2026, with no account. Add ?limit=100 to receive up to 100 entries per request.

Why are my Reddit RSS feeds not working?

Usually rate limiting. In our test, Reddit answered one anonymous feed request per minute and returned HTTP 429 with an empty body to the rest, across all feeds combined. A reader that refreshes many feeds at once fails on most of them. Space requests 65 seconds apart and merge subreddits with a plus sign.

Can I get Reddit keyword alerts from an RSS feed?

Yes, for posts. Subscribe to reddit.com/search.rss?q=KEYWORD&sort=new, or add restrict_sr=on to the subreddit version to search one community. In our test the search feed returned posts and a few community entries but no comments, so a brand mention inside a comment thread will not trigger it.

Do I need a Reddit account or an API key to use Reddit RSS?

No. Every pattern on this page returned a feed with no login and no API key on 20 Sep 2026. You do need a descriptive user agent, because curl's default received HTTP 403. Reddit's wiki says traffic without OAuth or login credentials will be blocked, so treat anonymous access as tolerated, not guaranteed.

Is RSS a good F5Bot alternative or Reddit monitoring tool for a business?

For noticing posts, yes: it is free with no keyword cap, though you maintain it and it misses comments. It does not score threads, check subreddit rules or write replies. When threads go unanswered, Bavior covers that half: it scores each thread, drafts the reply in your voice and publishes only after you approve.
